A group of 11 volunteers from both Choices and Adult Supported Volunteering worked hard, learning about sustainable farming techniques such as the ‘no dig system’- a process that prevents pests and disease by allowing nature to work the mulch into the soil itself. Following the skilled knowledge of the Care Farm’s staff the volunteers then got the chance to get their hands dirty, potting on plants and harvesting food for The Fold’s own ecoCafé.
It was hard but rewarding work, and the day was a huge success, with everyone gaining the benefit of the brilliant advice and atmosphere the Care Farm provided.
Tash Giaquinto, who supports the Choices volunteers, said “we had a great day and people from The Fold have been so supportive of this project, the volunteers from both projects worked very hard and really showed what people living with any form of disability can achieve given just a little support, all the staff are looking forward to many more successful group volunteering days”
Choices volunteers were suitably impressed by The Fold and the activities provided, one stated “it was good, I enjoyed getting my hands dirty, I thought the fold was clever and I had a lot of fun.”
Not to be outdone, an Adult Supported volunteer added “it was good working on the pots and I liked being outdoors, I learnt how to work outdoors without using tools, just my hands.”
Funded by Worcestershire County Councils Children’s Services , Choices is a supported group volunteering project from Worcester Volunteer Centre that promotes volunteering to young people (aged 16-19yrs) with disabilities, supporting the development of communication, social and team-work skills via a ‘pre-volunteering’ programme.
The visit to The Fold Care Farm was the first of a continuing range of activities every Friday where young volunteers work together as a group, supported by Worcester Volunteer Centre staff. The new experiences and skills gained from group volunteering hopes to allow any young person the opportunity to then move into a more regular volunteering placement.
If you are interested or know someone who would like to volunteer for Choices or Adult Supported Volunteering Projects we would love to hear from you! Volunteer activities are every Friday and will offer a wide variety of opportunities- there is something for everyone! Each Friday is optional and we can discuss what placements would be of most interest and benefit to you. For enquiries and to join please contact either:
