On 7-9th of October hundreds of young people will be in Salford, Manchester to discuss climate change and attend a series of workshops, talks, entertainment and a Day of Action. The training will give young people the skills and knowledge to be effective environmental campaigners in their local communities, and to build CVs for a green job in a green economy that is expanding every day. Roots hopes to learn much about what we can do as a charity to help the Worcestershire community, its environment, and the young people who live within it.
Organised by the UK Youth Climate Coalition (UKYCC), Power Shift is coinciding with 11 other events around Europe as part of the European youth climate movement. By giving such training the aim is to make a positive impact on the world economy and “make green jobs, clean air, healthy lifestyles and fairness an integral part of the future we build together”.
Power Shift events in America, have gathered 10,000 young people in Washington and secured a meeting with Barack Obama at the White House. In April this year key note speakers at the event included Al Gore, Van Jones and Bill McKibben. So the event is big news and a great chance to become a part of a youth environmental movement that pushes towards a just and clean future.
Worcester Roots will benefit tremendously from joining such a significant environmental occasion and will use what we gain to continue making a positive impact in the Worcestershire community.
The Power Shift website contains a huge amount of information about the event and how to attend. We encourage anyone who is interested to check it out at http://www.powershift.ukycc.org/Home and get involved.
Power Shift promises to be an excellent experience for us as a charity and the UK youth climate scene as a whole. We hope to see some of you there!
